On April 28, the ILO (International Labour Organization) celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an international annual campaign to promote the prevention of accidents and occupational diseases on a global level. This year's campaign theme is "Optimize the collection and use of OHS data" and focuses on the critical need for countries to improve their capacity to collect and utilize reliable occupational safety and health (OSH) data.
The ILO aims to create worldwide awareness of the dimensions and consequences of work-related accidents, injuries and diseases and to place the health and safety of all workers on the international agenda and to stimulate and support practical action at all levels.
Data about work-related accidents and diseases are essential for prevention. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve recording and notification systems, as well as data collection and analysis of occupational safety and health (OHS) on a national level. This will provide countries with more reliable indicators about the efficiency of national OHS systems and will help them decide which OHS problems need to prioritize to receive the resources they need to resolve them, which are sometimes limited.
